SYNOPSIS

Set in the present day, when only a handful of survivors remain—five in Korea, and none of the 22 Chinese women featured in the landmark documentary Twenty Two—this documentary confronts a difficult question: what happens to a historical wound when the last people who can bear witness to it are gone?

Moving between China and South Korea, the film brings together voices from across the effort to preserve this history. Survivors and their children recall abduction, captivity, and a lifetime of carrying trauma—including one woman who eventually forgot her mother tongue and even her own name, and another whose children speak of her not with shame, but with pride.

Alongside them are those determined to preserve their stories: directors Guo Ke (Twenty Two) and Cho Jung-rae (Spirits’ Homecoming); scholar Su Zhiliang and the museum he helped establish in Shanghai; the graphic novelist behind Grass; the House of Sharing; the decades-long Wednesday Demonstrations in Seoul; and museums and memorials across both countries. Students, foreign researchers, and even a Japanese viewer grappling with his own upbringing reflect on responsibility, apology, and remembrance.

The film ends not with resentment, but with a passing of the torch—a younger generation determined to become “guardians of memory,” ensuring that this history becomes a lesson rather than silence, while also raising a call to stand against violence against women in wartime that continues around the world today.
